With a furtive glance over her shoulder, she pulled the corners of her cape tightly around her shoulders and became invisible. Just like that, she vanished into the air around her, and she stepped stealthily through the open doorway into the garden.

Careful to step only on the stone-studded pathway so as not to leave conspicuous footprints, she made her way off the property, stealing glances every few moments to be sure no one had seen her leave. Soon she stood with enough distance between herself and the house that she felt safe enough to remove the cape from around her face and peer back from where she came.

Small, even breaths condensed in front of her in wisps of white air that curled and dissolved. She’d done it. She’d escaped.

She paused only to catch her breath and to look one last time at the place where she’d learned to hide, becoming a knot in the wall or a stain on the carpet for the others to lament.

When she’d uncovered the cloak that morning and tried it on, she knew she’d finally found her freedom. She’d finally start over again.

Tossing her gaze to the sky above her, she smiled, threw the cape over her shoulder, and turned to face the future.

This is really good symbolism and everything, but did you steal Harry Potter’s invisibility cloak? Cause that was a gift from his Dad.

    (I really like this.)

Don’t worry, Heather Anne. I plan to return it.

Ok great. Because that’s what I was thinking, too. But I still love this post. We need more female superheroes who are ready to take on the world. Go you.
